THE ESC PARTICIPATED IN A DISCUSSION INTRODUCING THE EU SINGLE MARKET ACT

Mr. Vasil Velev, Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Bulgarian Industrial Capital Association, participated in an introduction of the EU Single Market Act organised by the European Commission Representation in Sofia.

He outlined the highlights within the adopted resolution on the same document before the participants at the discussion. Firstly, the ESC expresses its principle support to the Single Market Act for setting up a highly competitive social market economy and to the 50 proposals made by the European Commission.

Mr. Velev marked a few highlights from the resolution, which are important for the development of the small and medium business in the country. One of them is that the Council calls for greater attention be paid to the industrial policy and more concrete measures to promote European industry to be identified, including through achieving a sound financial system which serves the real economy.

“Think Small First” is a fundamental principle and the ESC welcomes the initiatives related to the venture capital, facilitating the access to finance SMEs, reducing the administrative burden, simplifying the Community rules on procurement, stated Mr. Velev.

Mr. Velev highlighted the ESC position that more means in less developed regions need to be invested. Another focus of the resolution, which he drawn attention to was the recommendation to the European Commission for effective and full integration of all Member States in achieving the goal for common socio-economic area, including through the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area.

In conclusion, Mr. Velev expressed the support for the EC proposal to establish a common consolidated corporate tax, but took notice of the position expressed in the resolution that our country should be strongly opposed to the introduction of a single tax rate.
